Locally owned and definitely locally flavored with a building of history. We did not name the business, the building named the business. Powerhouse is unique in every way, even in our menu. “Experts” warn us the menu is too big, with too many items and cumbersome to look through. But, we and our customers like everything on our menu so we keep them. While we are known mostly for the seafood, we are a favorite of many for our steaks. |

We did not name the business, the building named the business. Previously the structure was a powerhouse for the local electric company. And thus, neon Kilowatt!
Located in the back of Powerhouse Seafood and Grill, the Boarshead Pub features 50 cent drafts of Bud Light and Miller Light every Monday night!
Electricity was first generated in Northwest Arkansas in 1888 on the site where the County Courthouse now stands. This first plant was called The Electric Light and Power Company, with a starting capitalization of $36,000 and the capacity of “460 Heisler incandescent lamps.”
In the next 14 years, The Electric Light and Power Company was moved three more times before construction on this site began in 1902. Several layers of paint have been sandblasted away to reveal the beauty of the original brick walls of the building. Notice the numerous “patch jobs’ in the walls where old windows, doors, and other openings have been sealed and sometimes re-opened.
1904 was a significant year for The Electric Light and Power Company. The owners traveled to St. Louis and purchased two modern generators: a 75KW General Electric and 150KW Bullock generator that had been used for power at the 1903 St. Louis World’s Fair (actually Exposition, held to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Louisiana Purchase). With this purchase, Northwest Arkansas became the only generating plant in the area with such “state of the art” equipment. Over the next 20 years, both equipment and capacity were added to this site. By the mid-20’s, this generating plant was supplying electricity for every community from here to Harrison on the east; to the Missouri line on the north; to the Oklahoma line on the west; and to Winslow on the south…a very large area...but, of course, few people had electricity in those days.
This site was chosen for The Electric Light and Power Company because of the spring located under this building. Spring Street was so named because of the numerous springs flowing in the area, with the largest spring of all, the “Mother Spring,” on this property. This spring provided great quantities of fresh, cool water for the boilers and condensing coils of The Electric Light and Power Company.
The “Mother Spring” still flows into two hand-dug wells located under the main dining room floor. One of the wells sits directly below the hostess area. This well/pond area normally has 2 feet of flowing water but sometimes reaches upwards of 10 feet high. Luckily the dining room floor is about 18 feet high.
